In Rosleskhoz were Discussed Opportunities for Cooperation between Russia and France in Mitigating Consequences of Climate Change

On February 16th took place a meeting between Deputy Head of Rosleskhoz Victor Maslyakov and Ambassador of France on Fighting Climate Change Bris Lalond.

The French party was also represented by F. Vyelle, Embassy Adviser on Agriculture, A. Grave, Adviser on Transportation and Sustainable Development, C. Gioge, Second Adviser of the Embassy, Valery-Ann Bernard, and Adviser on Climate, Ministry for Ecology, Energy, and Sustainable Development of Territories of the French Republic.   The key issues for discussion were international cooperation between Russia and France on forests in connection with climate change. 

The Russian party presented a brief survey of forestry state in the Russian Federation. The specific features of forest management in France should be noted in this connection. In France only 30% of forests belong to state property. The majority of forests belong to small private owners and municipalities.  

In the course of this meeting the Parties agreed on further developing two-lateral cooperation along the following directions: exchange of information on issues regarding sustainable forest management, organization of joint scientific research, attraction of investments into forestry for implementing common projects, etc. 

In his turn, Bris Lalond attracted attention to forests importance for ecology, biodiversity and climate as a whole. He also confirmed interest of French party in joint cooperation regarding exchanging experience in using satellites for forest inventory. In France at present time this method is actively used, what allows to measure quantity of carbon in forests. 

At the end of this meeting Head of Russian delegation Victor Maslyakov invited France to take part in annual International Junior Forest Contest, organized for youth studying forestry disciplines.
